VOSTOK 6 · CHAPTER 2 OF 4 · 16.–19. června 1963
A joint flight with Vostok 5
Vostok 6 was not alone in space. Valery Bykovsky had launched in Vostok 5 on 14 June, and now both craft circled the Earth at the same time — the Soviets were repeating the dual flight of Vostok 3 and 4 from the previous year.
Soon after Vostok 6 launched, the two ships came within a few kilometres of one another — remarkably close for the time, though it was not a true rendezvous or docking: the Vostoks had no engines for orbital manoeuvring. Tereshkova and Bykovsky talked by radio with each other and with Mission Control.
